Philadelphia: a great film by Jonathan Demme

Published in 1993, Philadelphia quickly established itself as the first Hollywood film to openly address issues related to AIDS, homosexuality and discrimination. Directed by Jonathan Demme, this touching legal drama brings together an impressive cast, with Tom Hanks as Andrew Beckett and Denzel Washington as Joe Miller. two lawyers on opposite sides of a complex legal and personal struggle. The film also stars Antonio Banderas, Jason Robards and Mary Steenburgen.

The plot follows the story of Andrew Beckett, a talented lawyer who works at a prestigious law firm in Philadelphia. After being suddenly fired for what is officially professional misconduct, Beckett suspects that the real reason for his dismissal is his HIV status and his homosexuality, both discovered by his employers. Determined to fight for his rights and his dignity, Beckett hires Joe Miller, an initially homophobic personal injury lawyer, to sue the firm for discrimination.

A first Oscar for Tom Hanks

While Philadelphia is not based on a single true story, it is loosely inspired by several real cases of AIDS-related discrimination that emerged in the 80s and 90s. The plot is partly inspired by the story of Geoffrey Bowers, a lawyer who filed a lawsuit i first cases of AIDS-related discrimination after being fired from his law firm.

For his moving performance as Andrew Beckett, Tom Hanks (who would refuse to make the film today) underwent a remarkable physical transformation, lose more than ten kilos to believably portray a person in the advanced stages of AIDS. His performance earned him the first Oscar for best actor of his career. A statuette that he won a second time in 1994 for his role Forrest Gump.

The film also won the Oscar for best original song : Streets of Philadelphiawritten and composed by Bruce Springsteen.
