Tonight on TV: my least favorite film in Tom Cruise’s great action saga

Mission Impossible 2 : a very particular style

Since 1996, Tom Cruise brilliantly plays Ethan Hunt, the famous IMF (Impossible Missions Force) agent, in the Mission Impossible saga. A saga that has the particularity of offering films that are very different from each other. At least until Rogue nation (2015). In fact, after this film, Christopher McQuarrie became the first director to direct two works in the saga fall (2018). And he continued to ensure its realization Showdown dead (2023) e Mission impossible8 (scheduled for 2025). But before the McQuarrie era, every film had a different style. At this level, Mission Impossible 2 (2000) it is probably the most explosive work.

With John Woo to the realization, Mission Impossible 2 presents itself as an explosive action film with director-specific scenic effects. Especially in the last act, with flights of doves in front of the flames, brilliantly surreal shootouts and a motorcycle chase, full of iconic shots. Everything is done to highlight Tom Cruise (even more than usual). Sometimes cheaply or rudely, but whatever.

Because we admit that we have a lot of affection for this work. Especially for its romantic aspect (despite the tension between Tom Cruise and Thandiwe Newton). And his way of playing The Chained One by Alfred Hitchcock. As a reminder, the film sees Ethan hire Nyah, a thief, so that he can reconnect with his ex-partner, a former IMF member who he kidnapped of a virus called Chimera. This tone, but also the development of the screenplay and some key scenes (the racetrack sequence, the poisoning, etc.) are very reminiscent of Hitchcock’s film.

The unloved in the Tom Cruise saga

However, it must be admitted Mission Impossible 2 It’s not the best film in the saga. In our ranking on CinéSériewe had placed him in the penultimate position, right in front Mission: Impossible 3. But for many, MI2 stay least favorite of the saga. If we look at the press reviews, the feature film only gets 56% favorable reviews on Rotten tomatoes. This is the lowest score of the franchise, behind the first work (66%). Same story for the public who are only in favor of him 42% on the aggregator. From the part of Metacriticit is also a clear result with solo 59/100. A figure however identical to Mission Impossibleand slightly less than Mission impossible 3 (66/100).

For the French press it fares a little better with an average rating of 3.5/5 calculated on 21 newspapers. Or just before the third work, rated from 3.3 onwards Assigned. But if we look IMDB, Mission Impossible 2 is clearly my least favorite of the series a score of 6.1/10far behind the 6.9 of MI3. Finally, from a box office perspective, the feature film can at least boast that it doesn’t Don’t be last in the rankings, but almost. With $546 million in worldwide box office revenue, MI2 is in front MI3 ($398 million) and HALF ($457 million).

Let’s remember, however, that the first work of the saga cost “only” 80 million dollars, compared to the 125 million dollars of Mission Impossible 2 and $150 million for the JJ Abrams film. We can also estimate its profitability to be much higher than Showdown deadwhich only grossed $567 million worldwide despite its $291 million budget, the largest in the series.
