The Three Body Problem is intriguing on Netflix
Available from March 21st worldwide, the first season of the series The 3-body problem adapted from the science fiction novels by Liu Cixin, it rose straight to first place among the most watched series on Netflix. It must be said that the show is intriguing: the creators of game of Thrones at the helm and a science fiction bestseller behind the story.
The eight-episode series explores the aftermath of humanity’s first encounter with an advanced extraterrestrial civilization. The story begins with a secret Chinese science project during the Cultural Revolution, which established first contact with the Trisolarian civilization (whose people are called San-ti). This contact triggers a series of events that threaten humanity’s very existence, while posing complex questions about science, technology, and moral choices in the face of a cosmic threat.

The episodes take place in different eras, as well as in different realitieswhich did not fail to disconcert some of the public, who criticized the excessive complexity of the plot.
A season 2 already planned?
Season 1 of the series The 3-body problem ends with the failure of the first mission to intercept the San-ti ships, which are about 400 years from Earth, despite the efforts of astrophysicist Jin Cheng (Jess Hong). So everything has to be redone for scientistswho do not intend to give up in the face of the threat represented by the arrival of extraterrestrials.
This ending therefore clearly indicates that a season 2 is expected on Netflix soon. But the high cost of the first season (around $200 million) could jeopardize a second run of episodes if the series’ launch numbers aren’t satisfactory.

Regardless, the show’s creators have already started thinking about this potential season 2. And they already have something huge in mindas David Benioff recently told us The Hollywood journalist specifying that the second season would be “even better than the first”, in particular because of a scene that he compares to that of The Red Wedding game of Thrones :
At our first Comic-Con for Game of Thrones, someone asked us if we were going to have a second season. I remember saying there was a scene that would happen in season three – I didn’t even want to mention it, but it was The Red Wedding. And there’s a scene in season two of The Three-Body Problem that feels like that to me. Things are spiraling out of control. If we had the chance to do that… we would be over the moon.
David Benioff also pointed out that Liu Cixin’s trilogy became more and more ambitious as the plot progressed, and that from the second season a huge step forward would be madewhich will follow what happens in the second novel.
