This huge franchise lost Disney $130 million

Indiana Jones 5: the last of the last

Released in June 2023 after its appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, the film Indiana Jones and the Clock of Destiny, the latest work of the legendary series starring the famous adventurer played by Harrison Ford, was eagerly awaited by fans of the series. Directed by James Mangold, this fifth part took up the challenge of showing us an aging Indy, when he must once again go on an adventure, in search of a mysterious treasure. The film gave us some great action sequences, including a memorable train chase featuring a digitally rejuvenated Harrison Ford. But this riot of special effects and the rejuvenation of its star cost Disney dearly.

With a budget of $387.2 million, including $79 million spent on post-production, mainly for the special effects and the rejuvenation of Harrison Ford, the film represented a bold financial gamble for Disney. Filmed primarily in the United Kingdom, particularly at Pinewood Studios and various locations in Europe and North Africa, the film also benefited from the tax credit offered by the British government to encourage film production in the country.

A financial pit for Disney

Despite good reviews from the public and the press, Indiana Jones and the Clock of DestinyIt was not as successful as hoped at the box office, taking in a total of $384 million worldwide, below its original budget. But according to a recent report by Forbes, the actual loss to Disney would total $130 million. Forbes indicates that the studio received only $192 million in gross revenue from tickets. This loss cannot be compensated for even by the sales of DVDs or Blu-rays, which are in free fall, nor by putting them online on its streaming platform, which has changed the way in which revenues are allocated to films.

In 2023, and for the first time in eight years, Disney did not dominate the box office (and came in second, last behind Universal Studios). The failure ofIndiana Jones and the Clock of Destiny has something to do with it, just like that of The wondersor also Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
