“Why does Jack have to die in the end?” : James Cameron explains Titanic’s controversial ending

Titanic: a still debated ending

Published more than a quarter of a century ago, Titanic by James Cameron has established itself as one of the most iconic and profitable films in the history of cinema. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, the film chronicles the historic tragedy of the RMS Titanic while weaving a timeless love story between Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater. two souls coming from diametrically opposed social contextswho meet by chance and fall in love on the cursed transatlantic.

The end of the film, where the Titanic sinks in the icy waters of the North Atlantic, is marked by the tragic separation of Jack and Rose. After the ship is wrecked, Jack helps Rose climb onto a door floating in the water, large enough to support a person’s weight, but not two (although this continues to be debated). Sacrificing her life for Rose’s survival, Jack ultimately succumbs to the freezing cold, while Rose ends up boarding one of the lifeboats that has turned around in search of survivors.

James Cameron explains why Jack had to die

Currently in Paris for the opening of his exhibition at the Cinémathèque française (where we can also discover the drawing of Rose that Jack draws in real life, as well as many other treasures), James Cameron was asked about Jack’s final tragedy in Titanic by our colleagues at Le Parisien. And he explains why the character played by Leonardo DiCaprio had to die at the end of his feature film:

People often ask me, “Why does Jack have to die in the end?” » Because in my opinion a happy ending would have disrespected the tragedy of the event, said the director specifying, however, that it was important to reunite them at the end, when Rose will dream… or die.

Because this question also continues to fuel numerous debates, and the director still refuses to give a definitive answer. He simply told actress Gloria Stuart, who played the elderly Rose, to “hold her breath” as the camera filmed her in bed.
