Jason Statham is also Parker
In 1962, author Donald E. Westlake created the character Parker. It’s with his novel Like a flower (1962) which gave birth to This professional and very mysterious thief, who can be cold and ruthless. The man later appeared in about twenty novels. But it owes its popularity above all to the films that were inspired by it. Several famous actors have played Parker (under another name), such as Lee Marvin (The point of no return), Robert Duvall (Lack of organization) OR Mel Gibson (Return). And 14 years after the latter, it is Jason Statham who in turn became Parker in the film of the same name.
Adapted from the novel Flash fire (2000), Parker sees our hero (who is aptly named Parker this time) taking part in a hit with a gang he doesn’t know. But everything doesn’t go as planned. So, when the gang offers to reinvest their share for a bigger heist, Parker turns down the offer. Which, evidently, doesn’t work. The men at his side then turn against him and leave him for dead on a cliff. Only the thief manages to escape, and he intends to take revenge…
After finding the gang’s trail, Parker travels to Palm Beach where a jewel theft prepare. There he meets Leslie Rodgers, a real estate agent in financial difficulty who will help him betray the gang that betrayed Parker.
Violence, but not only…
Self Return with Mel Gibson tending towards film noir, in a dark Chicago, Parker and he much more action focused. It’s a pure Jason Statham film in which the actor has a lot of fun violent and sometimes bloody clashes. Among other things, Parker’s character will blow off an ear with a shotgun, smash an opponent’s head in with a toilet tank lid, or even defenestrate a man from several floors up. But if he gives blows, Parker also receives several, ending up suffocated with a tarpaulin or with a knife stuck in his hand.
Luckily, Leslie Rodgers brings some levity to this gritty world. His interpreter Jennifer Lopez It gives a real freshness to the film and a dose of humour. However, due to personal problems, filming was not so easy for the actress and singer. Finally, it is worth mentioning the presence in the casting of Parker recognizable faces like those of Nick Nolte and Bobby Cannavale. And playing the members of the gang that betrayed the hero, we find Michael Chiklis, Clifton Collins Jr., Wendell Pierce and Micah A. Hauptman.
Beautiful people who, however, did not convince the critics and did not attract the public en masse. With only $46 million in worldwide revenue, for an estimated budget of $35 million, Parker it was not a success.
