The End Times: Schwarzy Faces the Devil
The film The end of times by Peter Hyams was released in France in 1999. The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger in the role of Jericho Cane, a former police officer struggling with a mission of unprecedented scope : protecting a young woman, played by Robin Tunney, who turns out to be the target of Satan himself, who is in New York to give him a child.
Set at the dawn of the new millennium, the narrative revolves around a prophecy that announces the arrival of the apocalypse on Earth, triggered by the birth of this child from evil incarnate, which will mean the end of humanity. Jericho Cane therefore only has three days to prevent the worst from happening.
Peter Hyams’ film is part of a line of cinematic works that highlight the fear of an apocalypse at the dawn of a new millennium. The rest of the cast includes Gabriel Byrne who plays the Devil himself.
An unloved film
When it was released in French cinemas, The end of times earned an honorable score, drawing more than a million viewers to theaters. But in the world the film with Arnold Schwarzenegger is not very successful. With an estimated budget of $100 million, the feature grossed only $211 million, making it hardly profitable (it is estimated that a film needs to gross at least double its budget to be profitable). In the United States they yield only 67 million.
Furthermore, the film faces virulent criticism, both from professionals and the public. On the vote aggregator Rotten tomatoes, the film has 11% positive reviews from the media and only 32% from viewers (out of over 100,000 reviews). Among our colleagues atAlloCiné, same observation: the film gets a rating of 2.6/5 from the press and 2/5 from the spectators. What makes The end of times one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s lowest rated films.
