Scoop: What is this new movie available on Netflix?

Uploaded this Friday, April 5 on Netflix, the film News in advance is an engaging behind-the-scenes look at a catastrophic interview given by Prince Andrew, youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II, to the BBC’s Newsnight program in 2019.

The feature film directed by Philip Martin describes the workings of this infamous interview, from its preparation, to its broadcast on the BBC, and the chaos it caused in the UK. The cast includes Gillian Anderson, Billie Piper, Rufus Sewell and Keeley Hawes.

From true story to film

The Prince Andrew affair is part of a broader context of scandals linked to Jeffrey Epstein. The name of Prince Andrew was associated with the latter after the publication of testimonies and judicial documents.

Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s alleged victims, said she was forced to have sex with Prince Andrew on three occasions, in London, New York and on Epstein’s private island in the Caribbean, when she was a minor. She described in particular a photo of her with her boyfriend, taken in 2001, in which the latter has his arm around her waist, photo that Prince Andrew questioned during his 2019 interviewwithout however categorically denying it.

Prince Andrew’s 2019 interview with journalist Emily Maitlis (played by Gillian Anderson in the film) on BBC Newsnight was supposed to be an opportunity for him to clarify his position and distance himself from Epstein’s criminal activities. However, his apparent lack of empathy for Epstein’s victims, as well as his attempts at justification regarding his relationship with Epstein and his denials of Virginia Giuffre’s allegationshave been widely criticized.

One explanation that particularly caught viewers’ attention was when he claimed that a medical condition prevented him from sweating, in response to Virginia Giuffre’s claims that he sweated profusely during their encounter in a London nightclub.

The consequences of the interview and the accusations have been disastrous for Prince Andrew and the image of the English royal family. Shortly after the interview, he announced his retirement from royal public duties. Furthermore, he faced increasing pressure from the media, the public and various charities and companies with which he had links. In 2021, Virginia Giuffre filed a lawsuit against Prince Andrew in New York, accusing him of sexual assault. The prince has always denied the accusations.

In 2022, it was announced that Prince Andrew had reached an amicable agreement with Virginia Giuffre, although the terms of this agreement were not made public. This agreement ended the legal proceedings without either party admitting any guilt.

The affair left an indelible stain on Prince Andrew’s reputation and raised questions about accountability and transparency within the British royal family. At the beginning of 2022, by decision of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, Prince Andrew no longer had the right to use the predicate Royal Highness, and lost his military titles. In early 2023, following the publication of Virginia Guiffre’s memoirs, her brother King Charles withdrew his apartments from Buckingham Palace.
