Tim Burton’s version of Dumbo
In 2019, legendary director Tim Burton returns to Disney to direct another live action, nearly ten years after his version ofAlice in Wonderland. This time he faces the cult cartoon Dumbo, released in 1941. The plot concerns an adorable baby elephant with enormous ears that allow him to fly. After being the object of ridicule, he becomes the protagonist of a circus in decline, but it also appeals to the desires of an entertainment mogul. Once again, Tim Burton is interested in an individual marginalized by society, who will find salvation by accepting his nature.
This live-action version is not a shot-for-shot remake of the cartoon, as is often the case with Disney’s live-action adaptations. While the original cartoon focused primarily on Dumbo, Tim Burton’s film expands the universe by introducing new human characters (played by Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito and Eva Green) with their own story arcs.
To make it more contemporary, the film also takes an ethical stance towards the exploitation of animals in the entertainment industry, which was not the case with the original cartoon.
Fluctuating box office score
The real strength of the 2019 version of Dumbo is obviously the design of the adorable little elephant, all in CGI, which manages to convey different emotions through its eyes, and to transport the viewer into this touching story. Despite this attention to the design of the elephant, the film was not a great success at the box officewith only 353 million dollars in turnover worldwide, for a budget estimated at 170 million (i.e. a break-even point just reached).
Even on the reception front the results are very mixed: regarding the banknote aggregator Rotten tomatoes, the film did not remain average, neither among spectators nor among the press. ON IMDB, got a score of 6.3/10. In France, however, the film had a better reception, as evidenced by the ratings of our colleagues atAlloCiné : 3.7/5 among the press and 3.8/5 among viewers.
