Kim Kardashian’s Legal Team Responds to “Shakedown” Case Over Her New Skin Care Line

Like her sister Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian has built a billion dollar empire through her various namesake companies, including KKW Beauty, KKW Fragrance and, of course, the SKIMS line of shapewear. SKIMS was even unveiled as official underwear at the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022 and there are new changes on the way that will prove beneficial to Khloé Kardashian (or at least a very specific part of herself). Additionally, the reality TV star Hulu has decided to take her business to the next level with a brand new line of skin care products: SKNN BY KIM. The potential downside is that the brand has already been sued, but her legal team responded by calling it “extortion.”

Why was Kim Kardashian’s new skin care line being sued?

With judicial documents obtained from TMZ, the Brooklyn-based company Beauty Concepts, is the plaintiff in the lawsuit. They claim to have already registered the “SKNN +” brand and have approached Kim Kardashian & Co. in an attempt to prevent the new line of skin care products from using a brand that is too similar to theirs. By all accounts, Kardashian’s team ignored their protests. Today the company filed a complaint for trademark infringement.

The 44-year-old mother of four first announced that KKW Beauty was undergoing a name change in July 2021. The most anticipated rumors that she was working to eliminate the name “West” from the new line, following her divorce from Kanye West, they were real. She obviously abandoned “West”, but obviously she herself had not foreseen the rejection of those who also used the name “SKNN”. Michael Rhodes, Kim Kardashian’s attorney, said in a statement to TMZ about the debacle:

This process is not what it seems. SKKN BY KIM is a new brand following in the footsteps of Ms. Kardashian’s successful KKW product line. Based on independent research and development, her company filed a trademark application for SKKN BY KIM to protect the brand new products. This triggered the current extortion effort.

He went on to say that Beauty Concepts had falsely claimed that Kim Kardashian and her team had “done something wrong”. They claim the much smaller company had just filed the trademark before asking SKNN BY KIM to remove its similar wording. They claim that the name change request was denied, prompting the Beauty Concepts team to dispute the celebrity’s trademark applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The USPTO apparently also rejected the claim, as the word in question is an ambiguous reference to “skin” in general.

Kim Kardashian’s legal team also determined that, after unsuccessful efforts, the rival company “tried to make their business look more than it was.” Apparently, before all of the drama, Beauty Concepts had “no signs” and “no products” attached to its “SKNN +” logo. But when Kardashian’s new line of skin care products officially launched, he reportedly rented a new store and made other marketing efforts, including revamping his website. The rep was adamant that being a small business in itself does not “give you the right to shut down a global line of skin care products.” He hinted that the real motivation for the legal campaign was to get a big win from a famous face like Kim Kardashian.

It is not the first Keeping up with the Kardashians However, the first alum rodeo with the law. According to Forbes. It is not in the public domain whether the case was solved financially or otherwise, but Kardashian shared that the new line has an entirely new formula. Shortly after this trial, however, Kim K faced further legal issues with her neighbor regarding the underground vaults and property lines.

As seen in the first season of The Kardashians (streaming now for Hulu subscribers), Kim Kardashian took a turn in her efforts to become a lawyer when she got past the “baby bar.” She might just need to tweak those new skills imminently and re-imagine if SKNN BY KIM can barely get her foot out the door before the lawsuits come.
