Ghosts arrives on Netflix

It was in 1911 that Pierre Souvestre and Marcel Allain imagined one of the most famous criminal geniuses in literature with Ghosts. A mysterious man who hides his identity behind a mask. From there a first series of film adaptations directed by Louis Feuillade was born (between 1913 and 1914), before André Hunebelle offered a very different and entertaining version.

So it was in 1964 that it came out Ghoststhe first work of a trilogy composed of Fantômas is unleashed (1965) e Ghosts against Scotland Yard (1967). 60 years have passed. But the work was not forgotten. Far from it. As evidenced by the recurring broadcasts on television, and the soon addition of the three films to the catalogue Netflix. From April 24thsubscribers will be able to immerse themselves in these famous adventures brought forward by Jean Marais, Louis de Funès and Mylène Demongeot.

From the first work we discover this trio of actors who no longer need to be introduced. Jean Marais plays Fandor, journalist for the newspaper Le Point du jour, and the criminal Fantômas who at the beginning of the film hides under a blue mask and steals precious jewels. The two characters cross paths when Fandor publishes a fake interview with the criminal. The latter then kidnaps the journalist so that he publicly admits his lie… At the same time, there is Louis de Funès who plays Commissioner of Juventus, responsible for getting his hands on Fantômas. Finally, Mylène Demongeot plays Hélène, Fandor’s girlfriend and with whom Fantômas will fall in love.

An impressive success in France, and even more so in Russia!

André Hunebelle’s films openly play with the codes of James Bond of the era and take on a burlesque side. An approach that therefore distances itself from the original work, but which has greatly influenced the French, and not only… In fact, since the first Ghoststhe success went beyond our borders, with 2.6 million admissions in Italy and more than 1.8 million in Spain, while in France the box office rose to almost 4.5 million admissions (via Box office history). But that’s where the feature was most successful in Russia (in the USSR at the time). Over there, Ghosts passed 45 million entries! An immense success that gave ideas for a Ghosts in Moscow (like the fourth chapter).

This film has not seen the light, but Fantômas is unleashed AND Ghosts against Scotland Yard took place. And success was achieved there too. For the second opera, in which Louis de Funès was initially not supposed to participate due to his acquired popularity, he attracted more than 4 million viewers in France. The figures for the third feature film are a little less good with 3.5 million admissions in France (but still a crazy result in the USSR with more than 34.3 million admissions). Not bad, right? Is French.
