Winona Ryder describes breakup with Johnny Depp as ‘Girl Interrupted from real life’

Winona Ryder opened up about the split with Johnny Deppcomparing the situation with the movie girl, interrupted (1999). The actress was on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar and, in an interview with the magazine, discussed the relationship with the actor that took place from 1989 to 1993, ending after a sudden engagement.

“That was my moment girl, interrupted from real life,” she said, referring to the film she starred and produced about a woman who is in a psychiatric hospital for troubled young people being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

According to the actress, the period after the separation from depp it was difficult because of the pressure of Hollywood fame. Ryder revealed that she worked with an “amazing therapist” during this time, who helped her figure out how to be kinder to the younger version of herself.

“I remember when I was playing this character who ends up being tortured in a Chilean prison,” he said in reference to the film. The House of Spirits (1993). “I would look at these fake bruises and cuts on my face, and I would struggle to see myself as this little girl.”

“’Would you treat this girl as if you were treating yourself?’” he said. “I remembered looking at myself and saying, ‘This is what I’m doing to myself on the inside.’ Because I just wasn’t taking care of myself.”

Furthermore, he highlighted how Michelle Pfeiffer helped her at the time, saying that this difficult period would pass. “I never talked about it. That part of my life was very private. I have kind of a place in my heart these days, but for someone younger who grew up with social media, it’s hard to describe.”

In old interviews, Ryder described the separation of depp as “first true breakup” and “first heartbreak,” while the actor suggested that the media attention paid to the couple was what caused the split.
