Fallout: the fun apocalypse from the creators of Westworld

And what fall ?

Launched in 1997, video game franchise fall had largely convinced players with its futuristic apocalyptic universe. Prime Video decided to address this problem for a live series that, instead of directly adapting one of the games, opts for this one an original story that takes place in the same universe. We thus discover that in the 1950s, in the midst of the Cold War, a nuclear war broke out. Faced with this apocalypse, some privileged people took refuge in fallout shelters. For more than two centuries they lived in a certain luxury and tried to build a new and better society, based on common work and mutual help.

Except that outside, the rest of humanity adapted (some mutated) and did what was necessary to survive. So when a group manages to enter one of the shelters, it turns into a massacre. Despite this attack, Lucy (Ella Purnell), a resident dedicated to the cause, escapes thanks to the intervention of her father, who allows himself to be kidnapped by these individuals. After that, the young woman decides to start looking for him, but she will find herself confronted with an external reality, totally different from the one she knows. A world without rules, to which she will have to adapt quickly if she does not want to be robbed by men, or devoured by creatures.

At the same time, the series fall follows Maximus (Aaron Moten), a young soldier of the Brotherhood of Steel, built around the principles of chivalry. Despite having always been the victim of other soldiers, he will be promoted to the squire of a Knight (a soldier with powerful armor). Together they will have to find a mysterious scientist, also targeted by the bounty hunter Ghoul (Walton Goggins). But Maximus, like Lucy, will reveal his lack of experience and will have to react quickly to get out of it.

Similarities with Westworld

Already with Westworldthe creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy I imagined a futuristic world with a western atmosphere, thanks to an amusement park made up of androids. This time the duo is satisfied to produce fallleaving the creation and writing of the show to Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel) and Graham Wagner (Silicon Valley). Jonathan Nolan still directs the first three episodes, thus setting the tone for the series. It doesn’t take long to understand how the latter approaches his topic much more humor and irony than Westworldeven if we find a dark vision of the world.

Even though violence and horror are very present, including a long bloody sequence in the first episode, something crazy emerges from the production (the use of slow motion and music). A surprising contrast between the situation and the spectator’s sensations, which he could recall the irreverent side of The boys (another Prime Video series). The show goes even further by being deliberately grotesque in the design of some creatures.

A fun series full of irony

This fun approach, tinged with black humor, also appears in the naive and inexperienced characters of fall. Lucy quickly gets into trouble and it doesn’t take long for her to get into trouble. Ella Purnell is fantastic in this role, making his character immediately likable and not without courage. Above all, there is empathy for the heroine who will see all her beliefs collapse. The same goes for Maximus, even if during the first four episodes made available to the press his narrative arc appears less captivating and still in its infancy. On the contrary, the Ghoul, played very well by Walton Goggins, immediately conquers the audience with his style which recalls the Man in Black from Westworld.

Finally, note the visual quality of fall which, through its decorations, transports us to aIt is not so Mad Max in the Wild West. And with this futuristic apocalyptic universe (which comes from the game), the creators of the series can afford all the madness. Once again, this mix of Western elements, robotics and horrific creatures offers a surprising combination. Therefore, even if the first four episodes keep things under wraps, there is the potential to delight fans of the game and convince newbies.
