A moving drama on death row

As a reminder, The Green Line begins in the 1990s, when a former head guard at a penitentiary in Louisiana begins writing his memoirs. He will then return to the John Coffey case which marked him in the 1930s. A very imposing black man, sentenced to death for the rape and murder of two little girls, who on paper looks like a monster. However, after his arrival in the penitentiary and awaiting his execution, John comes across as extremely kind and thoughtful. An attitude that surprises Paul. And even more so when John shows up supernatural abilitiesallowing him to feel people’s suffering, even heal them…

The Green Line thus navigates between thriller, fantasy film and drama. But the film (and the book) is above all a reflection on the death penalty and racism. The revelations of the feature film make us understand the injustice of the treatment reserved for John, convicted without evidence. The film then owes a lot to the performances of Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan. The latter, despite his brutal appearance, makes the condemned man he plays empathetic and touching. A character who remained linked to Michael Clarke Duncan for a long time, until his death on 3 September 2012, at the age of 54.

In addition to these two actors, we find in the casting of The Green Line other well-known faces of American cinema, including David Morse, Bonnie Hunt, James Cromwell, Patricia Clarkson, Michael Jeter, Sam Rockwell, Graham Greene, Barry Pepper, Harry Dean Stanton and Gary Sinise. Without to forget Mr. Jungle, the mouse of one of the inmates. In fact, during the filming, which took place in the Tennessee State Prison, no fewer than fifteen rats were used.
