Production tells the story of Alice and Joana, who have a magical night during a party, but unforeseen events get in the way of love
Two women end up at a New Year’s Eve party to which neither of them were invited. The plastic artist Alice (Amanda Simão) ended up going to the wrong place, while the publicist Joana (Jessica Lígia) just responded to a friend’s request to accompany her to the event.
Unforeseen, the meeting between the two awakens a spark and turns into a magical night. However, the next day, the same destiny that brought them together interferes and puts a premature end to what could have been a beautiful love story. But would this be the end of Alice and Joana’s story?
The premise is from the series After midnight, which premiered on YouTube on April 16th. The production was created by a businesswoman, cultural agitator, DJ and, now, a screenwriter Lela Gomesdaughter of the filmmaker Rogério Gomesresponsible for productions such as Empire (2014-2015), The Strength of Want (2017) and Pantanal (2022), who directs the series.
“When I started writing, I felt like this was what I was supposed to do in life. I was enchanted by telling stories and I think this is a way of bringing up issues that I think need to be discussed by society. My father casually read the script and was surprised. He proposed to me to take it off the ground and we dove into it”reveals
Second Lelathe idea was to bring representation to the audiovisual, both in the story and in the production of the web series. “Women who love women exist, but they are little represented in audiovisual. We still have a long way to go on this issue, but we are working to change this scenario”reflects Lela. “It’s important for lesbian and bisexual women to feel seen, being able to root for a couple of women built by women in the most real way possible.”
Female representation is also present in the soundtrack of After midnightwhich features original songs sung by Ana Gabriela, Carol & Victoria, Izzy It is Carol Biazinexecutive produced by Tiê Castrofrom the musical collective CANETARIA, and from Pedro Myguelfrom TRANSE Coletivo.
The debut episode of After midnight is now available on YouTube – you can check it out below – and the rest will be released every Tuesday. In all, Lela Gomes The series already has three seasons planned and hopes “to be able to write many more projects for women who love women”. Watch the news:
