If he trailer for Princess it is indicative, viewers are about to have a new version of a fairly classic story of a princess. Joey King stars and in this action film directed by Le-Van Kiet, there is no damsel in distress to be found. After refusing to marry the sadistic Julius (Dominic Cooper), the princess learns to fight to save herself and her kingdom. Critics have been able to filter Princess prior to its release Hulu subscribers so let’s see what the critics say.
Starring Joey King and Dominic Cooper, the film stars Veronica Ngo as Linh, who teaches martial arts to the princess, Olga Kurylenko as Julius’s sadistic partner, and Ed Stoppard as the main character’s father. Let’s see what the critics think, to begin with Gossipify’s review of Princess . Mike Reyes gives the film 3 out of 5 stars, stating that Joey King has a lot of weight to carry in this film, and he does it effortlessly, conveying a strong message of female empowerment:
The empowerment of women and the importance of forging one’s own path are very influential in The Princess, as can be seen from the simple description of what is at stake. Some versions of this type of story would potentially be hampered by clumsy dialogue and symbolism, or perhaps too acidic language possessed by the protagonist. That’s not the case here, as the message is pretty much woven into the fighting and spectacle that come into play.
Pierre Debrug from Variety says the script is full of clichés, but Princess deserves credit for trying to find the formula to help deprogram a generation accustomed to seeing their princesses waiting to be saved or married:
The princess isn’t as smart or perverse as Ready or Not (from the duo behind the recent Scream sequel), who oppose marriage in 2019, but it’s the kind of counter-programming that an entire generation of spectators, tied to the altar and mesmerized by. For decades of Disney movies, they will find themselves wishing they existed as children, and many children will internalize that by projecting that bloody Hulu original behind their parents’ backs.
by Jeff Ewing Forbes agrees it’s a formula that works and Joey King really shows his combat training, as the action is about 90% of the movie. That leaves little room for character development, but this review says she gets along well in this story of a princess who proves she can manage her own business:
The Princess is a violent and fiery remix of the traditional “princess in need of saving” tropes, directed by a talented Joey King who credibly kicks all kinds of butt. The storyline is a bit subtle, there’s little in its execution that isn’t action, but if an action-packed trope remixer is what you’re looking for (and it should be), it’s exactly the movie you need. It is a great time.
However, not all reviews are as positive as Brent Simon’s. audiovisual club Judgments Princess to D. This review says that Joey King struggles to deliver a fully dimensional character, and the rest of the production doesn’t do him any favors, which generally feels like shortcuts and trade-offs:
An overtly simplistic and downright irrelevant action film, The Princess lacks the narrative certainty and clarity of purpose of its main character. Also lacking a contrived sense of adventure, the result is neither fish nor bird: too generic for most fans of the genre and too violent for guys looking for a little rah-rah in this story of a young woman. who protects it. kingdom with the blade of a sword.
David Ehrlich from IndieWire He also rates the film with a D and agrees that Joey King shouldn’t be held responsible for the film’s damages, as actors are rarely asked to wear a film so much that he does nothing to lift them. The review questions who the intended audience is, with the associated “sub-YA” dialogue mortal combat– level of violence:
This fable is not about a princess fighting her captors, but rather about the princess, a delicate and defenseless trope who desperately seeks a man to save her, who rebels against those expectations. This idea isn’t exactly smart enough to justify the film’s near-total lack of detail or texture, but it would be a mistake to ignore that The Princess is consciously trying to turn her core nature from a bug into a feature.
Reviewers may disagree on how much fun they enjoyed Princess, but everyone says it is full of violence and action. They also seem to like the fact that the typical “princess” storyline is turned upside down, even if they disagree with the success of the film. If you want to judge for yourself, Princess is now available to stream on Hulu.
