Chris Hemsworth still hasn’t recovered from the failure of Thor 4
The first Thor film, released in 2011 and directed by Kenneth Branagh, saw Chris Hemsworth make his debut in the title role. The actor plays the powerful Asgardian god, who learns essential lessons about humility and responsibility be banished to Earth. This film introduced Hemsworth to global audiences, establishing the character of Thor as a central pillar of the Marvel Universe.
Thor then appeared in Avengers the following year where he joined the other Marvel superheroes to take on intergalactic threats Thor: The Dark World (2013), his second solo venture. In 2015, the character returned Avengers: Age of Ultron along with other Marvel superheroes.
In 2017, Thor: Ragnarok brand an important turning point for the character. The film, directed by Taika Waititi, takes on a lighter and more comedic tone, allowing Hemsworth to explore new facets of the character. Thor loses his hammer Mjolnir, but finds new sources of strength when facing his sister Hela, played by Cate Blanchett.
The god of thunder then makes memorable appearances Avengers: Infinity War (2018) e Avengers: Endgame (2019), where he deals with the emotional turmoil caused by Thanos and his actions. These films strengthen the character’s evolution, showing a more vulnerable and complex Thor, but he also changed physically. A physical change continued in the last work of the saga, love and thunder, released in 2022, which has had a complicated journey. And Chris Hemsworth questioned himself a lot after this failure.
“A caricature of myself”
At the global box office, Thor: Love and Thunder performed well, with revenues of $761 million (compared to its predecessor’s $854 million). However, viewer feedback on the film has not been kind as it is the lowest rated work in the entire saga dedicated to the God of Thunder.
Many fans of the superhero had in fact deplored it heavy humor too present and visual effects that are messy by the standards of the saga. Criticisms that Chris Hemsworth understood, since he declared in June 2023 that he believed they had pushed the limits too far, and that it had become “ridiculous”.
A year later, the pill still hasn’t worn off for Chris Hemsworth who once again addressed the failure of the film in a long interview given to Vanity Fair. In it he confided that he was largely responsible for this failure, that he had “let himself be carried away by improvisation and disappointments” and that he had “become a caricature” of himself. He said he regrets not living up to the public’s expectations.
