Adrift: Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin are on a boat
The film Adrift by Baltasar Kormákur, released in 2018, is set on board a boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Tami Oldham (Shailene Woodley) and her partner Richard Sharp (Sam Claflin) find themselves trapped in one of the worst hurricanes in recorded Pacific history.
The plot follows the couple after they depart from Tahiti aboard a sailboat. Their journey, initially planned as an idyllic crossing to San Diego, takes a catastrophic turn when caught in a Category 4 hurricane. After the storm, Tami wakes up to find the boat in ruins and Richard seriously injured. The film focuses on Tami’s struggle to return to land, as she deals with her companion’s injuries and the damage to the sailboat.
The true story of Tami Oldham
Adrift is inspired by Tami Oldham Ashcraft’s autobiographical story, “Red Sky in Mourning: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Survival at Sea“, which details the trials he had to endure. Initially, the project was planned as pure fiction until the writers, Aaron and Jordan Kandell, discovered Tami’s true story.
Unlike what was shown in the film, the reality of Tami’s experience was even more tragic. Richard Sharp was killed during the hurricane, leaving Tami alone to battle the elements. After being unconscious for several hours following the impact of the hurricane, she woke up alone on the wreck of the sailboat, realizing that Richard had been overwhelmed by the sea.
With the boat badly damaged and her means of navigation reduced, Tami had to demonstrate exceptional ingenuity and endurance to survive. For 41 days she ate what she found and sailed more than 1,500 kilometers until she reached Hilo on the island of Hawaii.
Tami Oldham served as a consultant on the film Adrift, and also participated in the promotion, as can be seen in the video above. The change in the plot that leaves Richard alive a little longer wasn’t a problem for him.
