Romain Gavras conquers Hollywood
After Athena, released on Netflix after its presentation in competition at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, Romain Gavras is preparing his new film. Several pieces of information have been revealed including the title, synopsis and main cast. And suffice it to say, it’s very promising.
Title Sacrifice, this film which presents itself as a satire promises to be one of the most attractive projects presented at the Film Market of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it should find its distributors without too much difficulty. In fact, according to information from Deadline and a sign that the project is convincing, it took just a few days from sending the script to establish the casting. And what casting!
They are thus announced on the poster of the Sacrifice Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Gioia, Brendan Fraser AND Salma Hayek Pinault. For his fourth feature film and first English-language production, Romain Gavras therefore has a cast all Stars.
Sacrificea Ruben Östlund style satire?
The synopsis of Sacrifice it’s next. A group of violent, radical individuals storm an ultra-selective charity gala, motivated by a mystical quest and the fulfillment of a prophecy. Anya Taylor-Joy should play the leader of this group of attackers, namely Chris Evans the movie star he chooses to be sacrificed, with two other people. Romain Gavras explained the origin of his idea to Deadline:
It comes from a very simple idea. Every time we go to these events, whether it’s Cannes, or a charity gala, and there are all these people… I have this mischievous side, and I think the audience has it too, when we observe these types of events, in one in a certain way we want something to go very wrong… When we see these stars, all this glitter, everything else, we want it to go to hell, don’t we?
After facing desperate violence in popular circles with Our day Will Come AND Athena, Romain Gavras seems to be taking the path of a cinema that evokes that of Ruben Östlund, a specialist in satire and catastrophe in an ultra-bourgeois environment. To date, the filming of Sacrifice the start is scheduled for September 2024.
