Barbarian on Netflix: what is this horror film?
In October 2022, the film Barbaric had attracted a lot of attention. This horror film directed by Zach Cregger had actually been very successful global box officewith more than 45 million dollars in revenues, for a budget of only 4 million. A great buzz had surrounded its release in the United States, making the film one of the horror films of the year 2022.
In France, the feature film was unfortunately not released in theaters, but directly on Disney+ in October of the same year. The film begins when Tess, played by Georgina Campbell, arrives in Detroit for a job interview. She discovers that the house she booked on Airbnb is already occupied by a man named Keith, played by Bill Skarsgård. Despite an unfavorable first impression and strange circumstances, Tess decides to spend the night at home, because all the hotels in the city are full. What begins as an uncomfortable situation takes a turn for the worse when Tess discovers a secret passage leading to a spooky basement, setting off a series of terrifying events that plunges her into a full-blown nightmare.
Oppressive first 40 minutes
The first part of Barbaric It’s one of the scariest things that horror cinema has offered us in recent years. When Tess discovers the basement entrance to the house, we find ourselves immersed survival under tensionwhich reminds us of something very disturbing REC by Jaume Balaguero released in 2008. Without revealing too much, the feature film surprises and uses the codes of horror to better test the spectators’ nerves.
After a particularly tiring first 40 minutes, Barbaric he suddenly changes point of view, in an about-face that takes time before hanging the wagons in irons. The second part of the film is more classic in its outcome, and sometimes borders on the grotesque in its revelation.
