Megalopolis takes place
Megalopolis, selected in competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, is one of the most anticipated events of the year. A project that lasted several decades for Francis Ford Coppola, who took an estimated production budget out of his pocket $120 million. Very solid fusion, use of the famous “volume” technology, this is fantastic epic science fiction tale reveals itself a bit today with a captivating trailer.
The city of New Rome must change, which creates a great conflict between Caesar Catilina, a genius artist with the power to stop time, and the arch-conservative mayor Franklyn Cicero. The former dreams of an ideal utopian future while the latter remains very attached to a regressive status quo that protects greed, privilege and private militias. The mayor’s daughter and jet-setter Julia Cicero, in love with César Catilina, is torn between the two men and she will have to discover what seems best for the future of humanity.
Ready for autumn?
These images, in fact, consist of a scene in which, Caesar, the character played by Adam Driver is found on top of a building that closely resembles the Chrysler Building in New York. The character approaches the void and, as he throws himself into it, shouts “Time, stop!“, his fall thus remaining suspended.
There is, on an aesthetic level, in these first images the air of the latest work by Matrix, a film that in its own way also dealt with the legacy of an empire. In fact, Megalopolis, in its ambition of great tragedy like the fall of Rome it is also inevitably the story of its legendary director. The cast, around Adam Driver, is made up in particular of Nathalie Emmanuel, Laurence Fishburne and Shia LaBeouf, Aubrey Plaza, Jon Voight and Giancarlo Esposito, Talia Shire, Forest Whitaker, Jason Schwartzman and Dustin Hoffman.
The film’s production was laborious, with at one point rumors of “chaos”. Having reached the end of his production, defined as “unique”, “bizarre”, Megalopolis then he had difficulty finding distributors, for a film that was certainly prestigious but also perceived as risky.
