At trial, victims described how R. Kelly subjected them to perverse and sadistic moments when they were minors. Several said how he would demand strict adherence to rules, such as needing permission to eat or go to the bathroom, as well as writing “apology letters” intended to absolve him of wrongdoing.
Before sentencing last Wednesday, some victims made statements, such as “Angela”, who said that “with each addition of a new victim, you grew in evil.” On this sentencing day “we claim our names,” she said. “We are no longer the preyed upon individuals we once were.”
Lizzette Martinez also stated: “Robert, you destroyed so many people’s lives.” Another unnamed victim, who addressed the singer directly: “You made me do things that broke my spirit. I literally wanted to die because of how low you made me feel. Remember that?” R. Kelly did not go to court.
