Tonight on TV: This movie had the MCU’s worst performance at the box office

The MCU in its death throes

The MCU is one of cinema’s biggest film franchises and the most profitable by almost 30 billion dollars reported at the global box office. With 33 feature films to date, after the first film in this universe, Iron Man, released in 2008, the MCU has experimented its peak between 2018 and 2021with the box office success of billion-dollar films Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel AND Avengers: Endgame, then those of the last two Spider-Man films with Tom Holland in the title role. Since then it has been a free fall on a critical and above all commercial level, with much lower box office performance.

And the last MCU film to date, The wondersreleased in November 2023, it thus set a sad record for the MCU.

Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), aka Captain Marvel, must deal with the unforeseen consequences of her victory against the Kree. Unexpected effects now force him to shoulder the burden of a destabilized universe. During a mission that catapults her into a strange vortex closely linked to the actions of a Kree revolutionary, her powers mix with those of Kamala Khan-aka Miss Marvel (Iman Vellani), her super-fan from Jersey City – and those of her “niece”, Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), now a SABER astronaut. Initially chaotic, this unlikely trio soon finds themselves forced to team up and learn to work together to save the universe.

Brie “Captain Marvel” Larson fails

While up until then the worst performance of an MCU film at the global box office had been that of The Incredible Hulk by Louis LeterrieRreleased in 2008 and the second MCU film, with $264 million in revenue on a production budget of $150 million, The wonders took this title away from him.

In fact, the film starring Brie Larson received only worldwide $206 million in revenuewhile its production budget is estimated at approx $270 million… A monumental failure, since second News about the albumit would have needed to reach $440 million to break even, and 700 million dollars be profitable…

The wonderssigning this terrible performance, illustrates an MCU in total loss of momentum, despite being in a certain sense a sequel to the film in which Brie Larson starred alone in 2019, Captain Marvelwhich had brought him more than$1.1 billion of recipes in the world.
