The scenario of Bac North is inspired by a real case that happened in 2012, in which members of the BAC Nord de Marseille were accused of corruption and illegal practices. Subsequent investigation revealed a embezzlement system within the unit, including the theft and resale of drugs seized during searches. This affair had serious repercussions, leading to the dissolution of this specific unit.

Eight César nominations and two million entries

After several postponements related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bac North was released in French cinemas on August 18, 2021 and was a great success with the public: the film managed to bring together more than two million spectators at the cinema. It is the third biggest French hit of the year, behind Kaamelott AND Les Tuches4.

The following year, the feature film was nominated eight times at the César ceremony: best film, best director, best supporting actor for Gilles Lellouche, best supporting actor for François Civil (who had worked hard on his Marseille accent), best actor supporting role for Karim Leklou, best editing and best original music. He won’t win any of these statuettes, but he will still leave with a prize: the César for high school students.

At the time of its presentation at the Cannes Film Festival, a controversy broke out that reached the highest levels of power, tearing apart the various political parties over this burning issue.
