The mother of the bride a hit on Netflix
Uploaded to Netflix on May 9, The mother of the bride quickly established itself on the platform. Shortly after its addition to the streaming platform, the romantic comedy was launched in the top 10 of new releases the most watched in France, in second place. Evidently subscribers needed some levity right now and they got it with this movie that follows Emma, who tells her mother Lana that in a month she’s getting married in Thailand! Except that the groom is not just anyone, since he is the son ofa man who broke Lana’s heart years ago. Enough to promise an explosive reunion in a heavenly setting.

It’s difficult to say with certainty why The mother of the bride attracted the public just as much. But we can imagine that the film’s casting isn’t entirely unrelated. In fact, we find several well-known faces in the film such as Rachael Harris (Lucifer), Chad Michael Murray (The Scott Brothers) who play supporting roles, or even Benjamin Bratt (Miss detective) and Sean Teale (Rosalina), who play the two boys who turn Lana and her daughter’s heads. But the most notable remain the two actresses who play the latter. Two former child stars: Miranda Cosgrove (Rock Academy) and Brooke Shields. The film’s success on Netflix is therefore pleasing given that Brooke Shields had a troubled career and childhood, with its share of controversies.
Brooke Shields, sexualized since childhood
Indeed, it was from an early age that Brooke Shields was pushed by her mother, Teri Shields, in front of the camera, appearing at 11 months old in a soap commercial. But he really exploded at the age of 12 with the film by Louis Malle The small (1978). A very controversial film as it features the young girl in a brothel where her mother (Susan Sarandon) works and who attracts the attention of a photographer. The director’s desire was to disturb, but the feature went too far for some who described it as “child pornography“.
If this role still allowed Brooke Shields to be revealed, the sequel proved particularly disturbing. As mentioned Vanity Fair in his portrait of the actress, the same year as The small, Magazine photo published “on the cover a photo of the little girl wearing makeup and naked“Years later, Brooke Shields will try to regain the rights,”sold at the time by the mother for a fee of $450“.
It was therefore from childhood that the actress was sexualized, and this continued into her adolescence. Like with the movie The Blue Lagoon (1980) or becoming Calvin Klein’s muse. Added to this is a complex relationship with her mother, accused of exploiting him. The latter is presented in Brooke Shields’ memoirs, There Was a Little Girl: The True Story of My Mother and Me (2014), as “an alcoholic capable of abandoning it for an entire evening to get drunk with the neighbor, while maintaining control over his career and personal life” (through Vanity Fair). Finally, in 2023, with the documentary Beautiful Babe: Brooke Shields (available on Disney+), looked back on her youth and career, only to reveal that she was a victim of rape early in her career.
