“You could say it’s a sex scene”: Meryl Streep defends this cult moment of her career

Meryl Streep talks about Out of Africa

On Tuesday 14 May, the immense American actress Meryl Streep received the honorary Palme d’Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival to celebrate her more than forty-year career. The next day she gave a film lesson in front of a room full of admirers. The opportunity for her to recall her memories as an actress, and in particular one of her most cult scenes in her filmography: that of the shampoo in Out of Africa.

In this 1986 Sydney Pollack film, Meryl Streep (who won the Oscar for best actress) stars alongside Robert Redford. She plays Karen Blixen, a Danish aristocrat who emigrates to Kenya to marry Baron Bror Blixen (Klaus Maria Brandauer) and run a coffee plantation. Their marriage is quickly tested and Karen develops an affair deep and complex played by Denys Finch Hatton, a free-spirited hunter and adventurer, played by Redford.

The shampoo scene is often cited as one of the film’s most memorable moments. Even though they haven’t started their romantic relationship yet, Denys Finch Hatton washes Karen Blixen’s hair by a river. A moment of pure tenderness and connection between the characters, but also very sensual.

“You could say it’s a sex scene.”

When asked about this cult scene of Phew of AfricaMeryl Streep confided:

It’s a sex scene in its own way, because it’s very intimate. We see many scenes of people sleeping together, but we often don’t see this kind of tenderness, this care

Then he stood up and mimed the scene as if Robert Redford were performing it for the first time, much to the delight of journalist Didier Allouch who took Meryl Streep’s place in the film for a few seconds. He said they must have done the shot six times, because Robert Redford couldn’t look sexy while bathing (which she mimes in the scene below). But at the end of the sixth, “it was beautiful, I was in love” declared Meryl Streep in front of an audience of admirers.
