Adele is responding to the backlash over her last-minute decision to postpone her Las Vegas residency earlier this year.
The 34-year-old British singer spoke to BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs about the guilt he felt after abruptly ending his career at Caesars Palace’s Coliseum, but says he doesn’t regret the difficult choice.
“I really felt everyone’s disappointment and I was devastated and scared to let them down,” Adele said. “I thought I could fix it and make it work, but I couldn’t and I stand by that decision.”
The superstar singer canceled her Weekends With Adele residency in an emotional video on Instagram just a day before its scheduled January 21 date, citing production delays caused by COVID-19.
“I’m not going to do a show just because I have to, or because people are going to cut themselves, or because we’re going to lose a lot of money. I don’t think the show is good enough,” Adele told BBC Radio 4.
While confident in his decision to postpone his residency, the singer says the results of the ordeal left him desperate. “I was a shell of a person for a few months,” he said. “I had to wait and cry, I think I regret the shows and I got over the guilt but it was brutal.”
The Las Vegas residency had not moved as of yet.
“Of course, it could be someone on TikTok or Instagram Live, every day I’m like, ‘I’m working on this,'” Adele explained. “Of course I’m working on it! I won’t date if I don’t have anything to update because that just creates frustration.”
On Friday, the “Hello” singer triumphantly returns to the stage at London’s BST Hyde Park Festival, marking her first public show in five years. Their two-hour set included hits like “Rumor Has It” and “Rolling In the Deep” as well as the album’s 30-track live debut, “Oh My God”.
“Oh my God, I’m back home,” the multi-Grammy award winner told the sold-out crowd. “It’s very strange to be in front of a crowd again. I get really nervous before every show, but I love being here.”
BST Hyde Park marked Adele’s first public show of 2017, following two performances at London’s Wembley Stadium. She last performed at the Brit Awards in February and appeared in televised events leading up to 30’s release in November 2021.
