Horizon : a madness by Kevin Costner
During the 77th Cannes Film Festival, Kevin Costner came to present his new western: Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. A very ambitious work, since, as the title indicates, it is only the first part of the immense fresco that the actor and director wants to tell the History of America. More specifically, over a 15-year period, before and after the Civil War.
For this, Kevin Costner participated in the financing with his personal money, injecting at least $38 million into the budget. This allowed him to make this first three-hour film, which will be released in theaters in theaters July 3 in France. But also the second, already filmed and which will be released just two months after chapter 1, on September 11th. Except the saga Horizon I won’t stop here. Kevin Costner started filming a third film, and is considering at least a quarter of it. The director’s goal is to offer a journey into the heart of this developing America, rather than a classic plot. A way to shake up the western genre.
An unconvincing chapter 1
However, if there is a certain audacity in this crazy project that we can only rejoice in, the result remains disappointing. Or at least not up to the ambitions shown by Kevin Costner. Despite its visual beauty, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 We were not entirely convinced by this approach to the story, in our opinion it was too distracting. Which doesn’t stop us from wanting to know more, as we explained in our article.

But while Cannes Film Festival feedback on the film was generally mixed, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 I saw the aggregator Rotten tomatoes we share the first reviews of the feature film. And the rating on the site is even less glorious than we thought 33% positive reviews from 21 reviews (mostly American). This may worry Warner Bros., which has therefore dated the first two films Horizonand while the third is in production.
Of course, the important thing for the study will be box office numbers. We have also already seen films criticized by the press and successes in theaters (like the saga Poison). But there is no doubt that these very negative opinions will not help this chapter 1, and we will have to monitor closely the numbers of the first weekend operational in the United States on June 28. If it fails, we can’t imagine how Warner Bros. will react for subsequent films.
