Little season for blockbusters
It’s a great promise and the world of cinema is all ears. The 2024 Cannes Film Festival is over and as summer approaches, attention returns to big-budget, big-spectacular cinema, the kind that brings in hundreds of millions at the box office. But from the great success of Dune, part two, the situation has become rather grim. The two critical outbursts on The boy of autumn and, a priori, Furious, failed to translate at the box office with performances ranging from dismal failure to disappointment. And it’s no better behind the scenes, with Tom Cruise at the center of an underwater galley on the set of Mission: Impossible 8…

“It’s very exciting”
Luckily, a few words from Emma Thomas, producer and partner of Christopher Nolan, in the special edition of Empire dedicated to the Anglo-American filmmaker, come and bring some cheer. The filmmaker, in a definitive state of grace after the success ofOppenheimer – and everyone else – should in fact prepare us for a new summit on cinema.
It’s very exciting. This is the moment where, in a sense, the possibilities are endless. We haven’t started thinking about the practicalities or anything yet. “Oppenheimer” has been so incredibly successful that we feel like we have an opportunity.
Obviously no details on what is germinating in the mind of Christopher Nolan and his collaborators. But after Oppenheimerwhich transcended the historical biopic genre by exploding its commercial limits $974.5 million of box office receipts worldwide, it is certain that he has all the freedom and all the means necessary to give free rein to his imagination. And, as he said earlier this year in an interview with Time, in which he also praised the films After sun AND Past liveshas no intention of going down the scale of his next films, we can expect a new, one-of-a-kind result…
