Mary and George finally arrives on Canal+
Canal+ has shown its interest in historical series for some time. Both with his original creations, like Versailles OR Maria Antonietta (which will return for a season 2), or looking abroad for programs of this type, as with Catherine the Great (co-production of HBO and Sky Atlantic). Once again, the encrypted channel appears to have unearthed a treasure as it prepares to broadcast Mary and George, one of the most anticipated series. Here is the official synopsis of Mary & Geroge: The scandalous true story of Mary Villiers, Countess of Buckingham, who, in 17th-century England, used her son George to seduce King James I and become his all-powerful lover. Through intrigue, the Villiers family became the most influential and successful family the English court had ever known.

If the show is so eagerly awaited, it is first and foremost due to the casting. Indeed, we find it there Juliana Moorewhose talent we know so well (we recently saw her in May December). Mary & George is not his first series. She has appeared on the small screen more than once, including wearing Lisey’s story (2021) on Apple TV+. At his side, we find Nicola Galitzine to play his son, George Villiers. The latter is on the rise. Presented as a series”mixing seduction, intrigue and political plots” Mary and George has already convinced outside France. It was in fact broadcast on March 5 in the UK, then a month later in the US on Starz. The foreign press then spoke very well about it (96% positive reviews ON Rotten tomatoes). For his part, Rowing introduced the series as “a historical drama with unhealthy contours“, guided by this”fascinating historical figure” who was Mary Villiers, the true queen of cheating.
Where and when to see Mary and George ?
Made of 7 episodes of 52 minutes, Mary and George will be available on Canal+ from Monday 3 June. Three episodes will be shown that evening, then two in the following weeks. The set will also be available on myCANAL. Finally, the documentary Maria, George and me will also be broadcast on the channel. There, Alexa Chung meets with the show’s team to talk about the creation of the work, as well as historians and experts on the Jacobean period to learn more about the culture, fashion and society of the 1600s.
