One of Clint Eastwood’s greatest war films leaves Netflix but is now available in 4K

American sniper : a Clint Eastwood summit

Present for some time in the Netflix catalogue, American sniper he died on May 31. But don’t panic! Because while waiting to perhaps find this excellent Clint Eastwood film on the Max platform (launched on June 11th), Warner Bros. I had the good idea of releasing it (from May 29th) a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Steelbook box set of the feature film. An all the more current choice given that, 10 years after its release in cinemas (2015 in France), American sniper remains one of the best war films. Also probably the greatest film dealing with the Iraq war, with Zero Dark Thirty (2013) e A day in the life of Billy Lynn (2017).

As a reminder, American sniper tells the story of Chris Kyle, a sniper known for having killed 160 people in the Iraq war. If only because of this macabre record and the glorification that has been made of it, he is a complex and ambiguous character. And that’s the strength of Clint Eastwood for having drawn such a particular portrait, far from simply praising the soldier, who died on 2 February 2013 after his return from Iraq.

As the director himself says, American sniper AND “not a pro-war film, but a film that shows the damageThe film therefore focuses both on Chris Kyle’s family life and on his mission (as a sniper) to save other soldiers when he is at the front. The director shows above all the human aspect. A fallible manwho follows certain principles without thinking and whose tragic fate will ultimately be representative of an America that is no longer glorious and that has been lost in this conflict.

The origins of the project and the training of Bradley Cooper

Huge success upon its release (more than $547 million in revenue for a budget of only 58 million dollars) and nominated 6 times for an Oscar, American sniper no doubt it would have been very different in someone else’s hands. Which was about to happen, by then Steven Spielberg he was the first director involved in this project initiated by screenwriter Jason Hall (who sees this soldier as a modern Achilles). The latter, after reading Chris Kyle’s autobiography, was able to meet him to establish his scenario. Bradley Cooper then he quickly joined the project. Ultimately it was after Chris Kyle’s death, and with the support of Taya Kyle and her long conversations with Jason Hall, that the film truly went into production, when Warner Bros. approached Clint Eastwood to produce.

This preparation, and everyone’s interesting take on Chris Kyle and the film, are chronicled in the bonus features of the 4K box set byAmerican sniper. This is also where we discover part of the filming in Rabat, Morocco, for 2 weeks. And how Kevin Lacz, a real SEAL soldier, got involved, to the point of appearing on camera in the same role as him. Bradley Cooper’s intense training is also mentioned. The actor had to pass from 84 kg to 107 kghe raised the cast iron for months and ate 6000 calories a day. This is what allowed him to actually lift 200kg of weights during one scene in the film, shortly before Chris Kyle’s first return from Iraq. In the end, the actor was able practice shooting with live ammunition truly put yourself in the shoes of the soldier you embody.
