Stuntmen and women finally distinct?
For years, the Hollywood stunt community has campaigned for wider recognition. There already exists an awards ceremony, created in 2001 in Los Angeles, LA Bull World Acrobatic Awards. But this ceremony rewards only the professions of film stuntmen. And the professionals involved are not named or distinguished in multidisciplinary ceremonies. The most prestigious of which is obviously the Oscar ceremony.

Various personalities, including Keanu Reeves, interpreter of John Wick in the saga of the same name, and Ryan Gosling, protagonist of the film homage to stuntmen The boy of autumn, have thus publicly expressed their desire to see these men and women of the shadows rewarded, irreplaceable for the filming of action sequences. Even several directors, former stuntmen such as David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, have fought for the creation of a category dedicated to the Oscars, in order to reward the results obtained in this field. Their efforts seem to have paid off, as the Academy Awards recently gave positive news on the matter.
“We are always open to dialogue”
During the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the magazine Empire met with the leaders ofOscar Academy, Bill Kramer its CEO and Janet Yang its president. In the various topics covered, Bill Kramer and Janet Yang talked about a potential Oscar award for professional stuntmen. Bill Kramer said:
We are currently talking to members of this community who are also Academy members about this possibility. We have added a new award that will be implemented in two years for casting direction, so we are always open to discussing these topics.
For her part, Janet Yang assured that the Academy is constantly evolving.
We listen to our members, and if there’s real, solid support, with levers to push the cause forward and they’re interested… That’s what happened with the casting direction. New categories have been created in recent decades. So it evolves, as the industry changes.
If a Oscar for best stunt is appearing, so it won’t be for tomorrow, as these new category creations take time. But this public stance by the very discreet Oscar Academy is an encouraging sign that the idea is being studied seriously and should materialize in the future.
