New episode of the Disney+ series features a flashback about the conspiracy, betrayal between Weyland Yutani and Prodigy Corporation
After delivering a narrative that seemed to follow a creative path of its own, Alien: Earth Decides in the fifth episode literally back back. Here we see what happened in the ship before it falls on Earth, a broad flashback that gives the fall more context, but also raises the question: Who really wanted to see these details now?
The decision works for those who wanted more information from the first episode, but it is questionable for those who had already satisfied the most direct approach to the attack of the Xenomorph. The return to the past alters the pace of the season and reveals a conspiracy layer: the fall of the specimens was planned and there was a traitor on board.
One of the hits of the episode is the development of Cyborg Morrow (Babou Ceesay, Wolfe). He is increasingly established as one of the central characters and, I venture to say, brings the best performance of the series so far. The plot involving his daughter and the justifications for behaviors seen earlier appear here convincingly and loaded with emotion.
The quality of production is undeniable: scenography, effects and technical investment stand out throughout the episode. Still, it is the feeling that creators cannot get rid of the classic franchise canon, family elements are repeated (the traitor, a prioritization of the specimens, the military hierarchy) that bring the series closer to what we have seen before.
In the end, episode five of Alien: Earth highlights the production dilemma between innovating and repeating consecrated formulas.
