Good feedback but a failure for Blue Beetle
Before James Gunn and Peter Safran were named heads of DC Studios to revive Warner Bros.’ superhero films, several projects were in the works. The arrival of the two personalities did not help the studio’s latest superhero productions, which it literally abandoned The flash, Blue Beetle OR Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, whose publications will have been anecdotal. However, Blue Beetle is perhaps the one that stands out from the crowd a bit. First of all because it was the introduction of a new character, a sort of poor man’s Spider-Man in our opinion. But above all, the response has been surprisingly positive for this feature film by Ángel Manuel Soto.
Whether it was the press or the public, the opinions were quite positive. 78% positive reviews have been listed on Rotten Tomatoes for professional reviews and 91% on the spectator’s side. On the other hand, this did not allow Warner Bros. to break even with Blue Beetle. Because the film still cost 100 million dollars, to which promotion costs should be added, even if they didn’t seem very high. And at the global box office, the feature film only grossed $130 million. Or the least profitable film in the DCEU and a financial disaster for the studio.
The superhero returns as an animated series
There is therefore reason to be surprised when we learn this Blue Beetle will continue his adventure. Not with a cinematic sequel. But with an animated series. Information announced by Expiration. According to American media, the next show will follow its own story and depart from the film, which however ended with an opening towards a sequel. However, if the series is successful, Warner Bros. and DC Studios might consider restarting a film, potentially with Xolo Maridueña returning in the title role.

For the moment, the series Blue Beetle it’s just the beginning. The story and casting still need to be perfected. The production would have at least found a showrunner in the person of Miguel Puga, and a director with Cristian Martinez. Ángel Manuel Soto would therefore be satisfied with an executive producer position, just like Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the film’s screenwriter.
The idea isn’t stupid and seems low risk. Especially because the public has already shown interest superhero animated series. We saw it with Harley Quinn which is in four seasons. Additionally, Warner Bros. recently revealed the first teaser for the new adaptation of Guardiansdivided into two animated films.
