Prime Video changes the poster of a huge war film (and unleashes fury)

Let’s not mess with Full metal jacket

Perhaps, for another film, this would have been a negligible detail. But in this case, the change made by Prime Video to its North American catalog did not go unnoticed and caused a stir, forcing the streaming platform to review its decision.

In fact, as the American actor Matthew Modine violently underlined, the famous manifesto of Full metal jacket, used in the film’s thumbnail on Prime Video, has been edited for a few days. This poster from Stanley Kubrick’s memorable war film, created by British artist Philip Castle, depicts a military helmet with a “badge” attached to it.Peace love“, next to the words “Born to Kill“.

Problem, the Prime Video thumbnail showed the headset and its badge, but without the phrase “Born to kill”. An arbitrary decision that was not liked by fans of the film and its lead actor Matthew Modine, interpreter of “Pvt Joker”, because it altered the artist’s work and erased the film’s deeper message. The actor posted his irritated misunderstanding on X on June 18.

The platform returns (partially) to its modification

A post with 1.8 million viewsmore than 4,000 shares AND 29,000 likes. According to Deadline’s sources, Warner Bros., distributor of Full metal jacket, then asked Amazon Prime Video to change the thumbnail to reflect the original work. A request which Prime Video complied with, without however restoring the original poster. In fact, it was during the day of June 19th that the sticker without the famous phrase was replaced by an image taken from the 1987 film.

In front of bad buzz generated by this modification and the request of Warner Bros., Prime Video then withdrew its “version” of the film poster. Was the platform within its rights to change the poster of a film for which it has online distribution rights?

In any case, this change was not just aesthetic, as it goes to the heart of Stanley Kubrick’s intentions Full metal jacketthat is, explore the duality of the human conditionhere in wartime: to be”born to Kill“and at the same time celebrate”peace and loveAnd if Prime Video has therefore heard this fundamental argument, the service has not reproduced the original creation in a thumbnail but has used an image of the film in which this duality does not appear
