Titanic: a timeless masterpiece

Released in 1997 in the United States (and in January 1998 in France), the film Titanic by James Cameron is one of the greatest masterpieces of world cinema.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, the film is set in 1912 and follows a penniless young artist, Jack Dawson, who wins a ticket to the Titanic during a poker game. On board he meets Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet), a young high society woman promised to a wealthy suitor, Cal Hockley (Billy Zane).

Despite their social differences, Jack and Rose fall madly in love. Their budding romance is abruptly cut short when the Titanic hits an iceberg and begins to sink, leading them to a desperate fight for survival in the frigid waters of the Atlantic.

Titanic is known for its ambitious production and its then-record budget of $200 million. James Cameron paid special attention recreate the sets and costumesusing life-size models of the Titanic and groundbreaking special effects to immerse viewers in one of the greatest human tragedies of the 20th century.

Never topped at the French box office

James Cameron’s film was nominated 14 times for an Oscar and grossed 11. A record it shares with only two films: Ben Hur (1960) e The return of the king (2003).

TO global box office, was a phenomenal success, grossing more than two billion dollars. It became the first film to cross the line symbolic billion dollarsand is still currently in the Top 5 greatest hits (it has since been surpassed by Avatars, Avengers: Endgame AND Avatar 2). But in France no film has done better than him since 1998.

Titanic it is in fact still the the biggest hit of all time with more than 21.3 million cumulative admissions at the French box office, ahead Welcome to the Ch’ti (20.5 million) e Untouchable (19.5 million).
