Hitman Before Under the Seine

Xavier Gens is currently enjoying huge success on Netflix thanks to Under the Seine. The shark movie, released online on June 5, 2024, is a worldwide hit and broke a record. Recently the feature film was even included in the top 5 Always of non-English Netflix productions. Quite impressive for the French director, who hasn’t seen such visibility since his debut. In fact, 17 years earlier, after directing his first feature film Frontière(s), produced by Luc Besson, Xavier Gens had launched an ambitious international co-production with Hitman (2007).

The second feature film by Xavier Gens adapt the video game of the same name published by Eidos, which mixes action and infiltration. As in the game, the film follows agent 47, a hitman who excels in his field. He is recognizable by a barcode tattooed on the back of his neck, his shaved head and his impeccable suit. After being hired to kill the president of Russia, the assassin complies. However, just when he thinks he has successfully completed his mission, he finds out from the media that the president is alive. The latter will also put a contract on Agent 47. If he wants to escape his employers who have agreed to eliminate him, the killer will have to follow the trail of his previous mission and discover who is really hiding behind the president’s face.

Timothy Olyphant here he plays the famous hitman. But the latter could have been transported vin Diesel. The star of the saga Fast & Furious he was first considered for the role, but preferred to settle for an executive producer position. Alongside Timothy Olyphant we find Dougray Scott, Olga Kurylenko and Robert Knepper.

Not enough success

While video game adaptations have been doing quite well for several years (Super Mario Bros.the series The last of us AND fall), things were a little different in the mid-2000s. Many works saw the light, but few managed to convince (we will remember the very good ones silent Hill). And the least we can say is this Hitman It’s not one of those rarities. Even though the film was profitable, it brought $100 million at the worldwide box officefor a budget estimated at $24 million, the feedback on it was mostly negative.
