The Paths of Dignity can be watched for free in streaming

The film Paths towards dignityreleased in 2001, is a drama film directed by George Tillman Jr. starring Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr. The film follows the true story of Carl Brashear, the first African American to become a master diver in the United States Navy as a scuba diver.

In the aftermath of World War II, Carl Brashear (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.) enlists in the U.S. Navy, determined to overcome racial barriers despite the official end of segregation in the U.S. military. The color of his skin benefits him unfair treatment and incessant obstaclesbut his exceptional swimming talent is revealed following an accident on the ship he serves on.

Promoted to the ship’s rescue team, Carl witnesses the rescue of a diver, an event that inspires his vocation to become a diver.

Brashear then enters the US Navy’s diving school, where he encounters the hostility of instructor Major Billy Sunday, played by Robert De Niro. The latter, ruthless and rigid, sets himself the mission of making Carl’s training particularly difficult. However, far from being discouraged, Carl Brashear uses every challenge as an additional source of motivation, determined to prove his worth. His tenacity and excellence end up earning him Billy Sunday’s respect.

Passed unnoticed in France with only 174,000 spectators at the time of its release, Paths towards dignity is to catch up free on the France Télévisions streaming service (france.tv) until August 26th.

The true story of Carl Brashear

The story told in Paths towards dignity is inspired by the real life of Carl Brashear, born in 1931 to a modest Kentucky family. In 1948 he enlisted in the United States Navy and began a journey fraught with dangers due to racial segregation. In 1954, after overcoming many challenges, he became the first African American to complete the U.S. Navy’s dive training program.

In 1966, Carl Brashear participated in a mission to recover a nuclear bomb that fell into the sea off the coast of Spain, during which he was Badly injured. Despite the partial amputation of her left leg, she refused to let this accident end her career. After a long rehabilitation, Brashear was able to convince his superiors to allow him to return to active duty, becoming the first amputee diver in Navy history.

Carl Brashear retired in 1979 and died in 2006, aged 75.
