5th Set: What is this tennis movie?
The film will be released in cinemas in 2021 5th sep directed by Quentin Reynaud sees Alex Lutz in the role of a tennis player, Thomas Edison, who attempts a definitive return to Roland-Garros.
At almost 38, Thomas, whose career never took off, became a tennis coach. Seventeen years ago he was considered one of tennis’ greatest hopes, but a traumatic defeat in the semi-final marked the beginning of his descent into the abyss of the world rankings. Today Thomas is preparing for what could be his last tournament at Roland Garros. Determined not to abdicate, he throws himself into a final fight to save his honor, despite the doubts and obstacles that stand in his way, especially the disapproval of those close to him.
Alongside Alex Lutz, we find Ana Girardot and Kristin Scott Thomas in the cast.
5th sep was partly filmed inside Roland-Garros in Paris, on court no. This is the first feature film shot at the legendary tennis venue; the teams gathered there for four weeks for filming.
A failure at the cinema to catch up on Netflix France
Regarding preparation, Alex Lutz trained intensively with a trainer to perfect your tennis. He said at the time of the film’s release:
At the beginning I played very, very badly, then I played badly. I still don’t play well, but there is improvement (laughs). This clumsiness was not serious because for the match or training sequences the role essentially required knowing how to put, in the most natural way possible, three balls in the pocket, or bounce them on the ground, or initiate a probable serve.
Unfortunately, 5th sep failed to find its audience when it hit theaters. The film starring Alex Lutz therefore attracted only 52,808 spectators to theaters. A major commercial failure, which perhaps can be remedied given that the film has been available for a few hours on Netflix in France.
