Untouchable creations
Anyone who has played Rockstar Games video games Red Dead Redemptionor even just looking at the images, can attest to the exceptional quality and “cinematic” ambition of these creations. This also applies to Rockstar’s most cult franchise, Grand Theft Auto. Visually, soundly, script-wise and entertainingly, Red Dead Redemption II AND gta V have set new elite standards. A level of production inaccessible to almost all of the competition given the very long development times and huge development budgets.

A truly phenomenal series since its second work in 2010, The License Red Dead RedemptionPleases GTAobviously interested in film studios. Logically they saw the possibility of producing adaptations for the big and small screen. But nothing ever came to fruition.
Dan Houser Explains Why Rockstar Has Always Refused
Dan Houser, co-founder and former president of Rockstar Games, lead writer and producer of the GTA e series Red Dead Redemption IIrecently gave a rare interview, in which he discusses his new projects since leaving Rockstar in 2020 and explains why he, along with his brother Sam Houser, have always turned down proposals for adaptations.
(Studios) thought we would be blinded by the spotlight, but we weren’t. We had what we thought were multi-billion dollar franchises, but the economic projections didn’t make sense. There was no point in taking that risk. At the time, the general consensus was that video games made bad movies. Today, it’s different.
Dan Houser explains that he met many people and studied multiple proposals. And that when he asked why he would agree to do an adaptation, the answer “because you have the opportunity to make a film“it didn’t suit him.
No, what you’re proposing is that “you” make a movie and we have no control and run the huge risk of ending up paying with something that belongs to us.
Proposals not up to par?
Dan Houser therefore saw things pragmatically. Whereas with video game licensing so powerful and profitableadmired throughout the world, the risk was too great for a film industry that was then incapable of producing good adaptations.

On an artistic level, we can note that it is also particularly risky to try to adapt Red Dead Redemption OR GTAwhich with their open worlds, their scenarios and their extremely rich and expert characters, offer a total artistic experience that no derivative production can match.
