SupraCell: what is the new Netflix series about?
After the success of season 4 of The Boys on Prime Video, a new superhero series has just landed on Netflix: SupraCell. This six-part drama series created by Rapman follows a group of ordinary people in South London who discover they possess superpowers.
The plot tells the story of five black Londoners who suddenly develop superpowers with no apparent connection to each other, except for their common origin. The main protagonist, Michael Lasaki (played by Tosin Cole), is a delivery boy who lives a quiet life with a dream house and car, ready to get married to his girlfriend Dionne (played by Adelayo Adedayo).
However, his world turns upside down when he travels accidentally in the future and discovers a tragic fate for Dionne. Michael must then gather other people with superpowers to try to change this dark future. These characters must use their new abilities while facing personal and social challenges. The cast also includes Adelayo Adedayo, Eddie Marsan and Yasmin Monet Prince.
Already in the Top 10 on Netflix France
Available on Netflix France and worldwide from June 27, SupraCell has already entered the most watched series on the platform. So, as I write these lines, it is 2nd place in Netflix France’s Top 10. He also had the luxury of watching the third season of The Bridgerton Chronicles.
Unlike traditional superhero series, the characters of Overhead Don’t rush to don costumes and save the world, but use their powers to improve their own lives and the lives of those around them.
Rapman expressed a desire to showcase characters that audiences can actually identify with, stating: ” If I had powers, my first thought wouldn’t be to buy a spandex suit. I’d think about how I could use my powers to put my family in a better position. » (The Geek’s Den, 2024).
Rapman is the first black creator to write and direct his own series for Netflix UK. The production team also used innovative photographic technology to optimally highlight dark skin.
