The True Story Behind the Movie Captain Phillips

In April 2009, the MV Maersk Alabama, an American merchant ship, was sailing off the coast of Somalia when it was attacked by pirates. Under the leadership of Richard Phillips, the crew attempted to repel the attackers, but Phillips was eventually taken hostage and taken aboard a lifeboat. For five daysPhillips was held at gunpoint while the US Navy mounted a rescue operation.

The outcome of this crisis was marked by a spectacular intervention by the US Navy SEALs, who shot down three of the four pirates and rescued Phillips. This event brought international attention to Somali piracy and the dangers faced by merchant ships in that region. Paul Greengrass’ film adaptation took some liberties with reality, as often happens, but overall remains faithful to the events.
