The film tells the story of Antwone Fisher (played by Derek Luke), a young sailor afflicted by uncontrollable tantrums. After a series of arguments, he is forced to consult the navy psychiatristDr. Jerome Davenport (played by Denzel Washington). Through their sessions, Fisher begins to confront the traumas of his childhood marked by abandonment, abuse and emotional difficulties. Fisher’s journey to recovery leads him to discover his roots and reconnect with his family of origin.

A True Story Behind Denzel Washington’s Film

The film Anthony Fisher is inspired by the true story of Antwone Quenton Fisher, who wrote the screenplay for the film based on his own life. Born in prison in 1959, Fisher was placed in foster care after his mother was incarcerated. He spent his early years in an abusive foster home, where he was physically and emotionally abused.

After leaving the child welfare system at age 17, Fisher found himself homeless and struggling. He later enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served for several years. It was there that he met a psychiatrist who helped him overcome his trauma. and find a meaning to life. Through her work with Dr. Davenport (a character based on her real-life psychiatrist), Fisher learned to confront her painful past and seek answers about her origins.

In addition to his work as a screenwriter, Antwone Fisher is also the author of books, including his memoir “Finding Fish,” which inspired the film’s screenplay.
