Pearl : a masterpiece still little known

If there is a film that deserved more attention and to be seen by as many people as possible, in our opinion, it is precisely that one. Pearl Directed by Ti West, the thriller is the second work of a trilogy started by X (see our review) and concludes with MaXXXine (in theaters July 31). Don’t panic though, Pearl is a prequel and you don’t need to have seen the other films to appreciate it. Each of the feature films is sufficiently independent and adopts a different style.

Thereby, Pearl It is similar to a hitchcockian thrillera sort of homage to Psychosis (1960), which also does not hide references to Wizard of Oz (1939). All while maintaining your personality and questioning your relationship with celebrities. The film is set in 1918, during the first World WarIt is far from the conflict that we find Pearl (My Goth)who has lived alone since her partner went to the front. She still has to take care of the farm and her quadriplegic father, under the stern gaze of her authoritarian mother.

But Perla desires another life and, when she goes to the cinema in secret, she dreams of another world that can open its arms to her. The encounter with the projectionist in the room will awaken in her the desire to satisfy her impulses. And when she learns that an audition is being organized to find dancers, the young woman thinks she finally has the chance to live elsewhere and to to become a star. Only he will fall hopelessly in the face of reality, and his reaction will be bloody…

My Goth exceptional

Although it tends more to the psychological drama compared to the horror film, Pearl creates real tension thanks to its rather disturbed heroine. The young woman, who lived in a complicated environment, soon reveals signs of psychopathy. You have to see her as she cheerfully kills the farm animals before feeding them to the alligator that roams the lake where they live. Or even regret that his family is alive, which prevents him from standing on his own feet. But Pearl remains extremely touching and empathetic due to an obvious lack of love.

An unforgettable heroine, thanks in large part to Mia Goth’s remarkable interpretation. Already excellent in the Xthe actress has really revealed herself with this role. Incredibly powerful, capable of terrifying in a moment of madness or anger, and moving a few moments later. A range of emotions that we find in this superb 8 minute monologue who deserved more recognition…

If the Academy of Oscars missed this masterpiece, and too few audiences discovered it in theaters (10 million dollars at the worldwide box office and a videocassette release in France), even if it remains to be scaled down as it is an independent film, Pearl can at least count among his fans Martin Scorsese. The director was very complimentary and did not hide his discomfort after discovering the film.

Pearl offers 102 wild, fascinating, truly (and I stress, truly) disturbing minutes. (…) I was fascinated, then disturbed, and finally so uncomfortable that I had trouble falling asleep afterwards. But I couldn’t stop watching.

We can therefore only be happy to see Netflix adds to its catalog Pearl. The film is available on the platform from July 16. We strongly recommend you discover it. As a bonus, it is a good opportunity to judge David Corenswet, the new Superman, who here plays the projectionist.
