There was therefore in particular Nosferatu by FW Murnau in 1922, Dracula with Bela Lugosi in 1931, Dracula’s Nightmare in 1958, and the Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola in 1992. Then, after Dog man in 2023, which slowly but surely marked Luc Besson’s voluntary return to ambitious cinema, the filmmaker seems to be returning to the canons of great spectacle that made him famous in the 90s.
A Romantic Story in Paris
The details of Dracula: A Love Story are kept secret, but Luc Besson has revealed some elements. We know, for example, that much of the film is set in Paris, at the beginning of the 20th century and in 1989, on the occasion of the bicentenary of the French Revolution.
His version of the Dracula legend highlights above all its romantic dimension.
The approach is totally romantic. There is this dimension in Bram Stoker’s novel, which has not been exploited much. It is a love story of a man who waits 400 years for the reincarnation of his wife. This is the real heart of this story, the eternal wait for the return of the loved one.
It is thus noted that in the Belle Époque period in Paris, Dracula meets a woman who looks exactly like his first wife, who died in the 15th century and whose death drove Dracula so mad that he distanced himself from God and transformed into a vampire. The director leaves the doubt as to whether this woman is a resemblance, a reincarnation or Dracula’s wife herself.
A film written for Caleb Landry Jones
After Jean Reno and Gary Oldman, two actors who particularly inspired Luc Besson, it is in Caleb Landry Jones that Luc Besson seems to have found his true self. his new muse. He explains that his “the fascination is not for Dracula, but for Caleb. We were just talking about roles that would suit him.
