Hollywood Gods and Greek Heroes
With the success of Gladiator In 2000, the film industry rediscovered its love for peplos and historical film with great spectacle. Then there were disasters like Vercingetorix in 2001, nice surprises like 300 by Zack Snyder in 2007, and blockbusters with mixed results such as Troypublished in 2004.
Currently available on NetflixTroy leaves the platform July 31st. There are only a few days left to appreciate its merits (and defects).
Troyas the title suggests, tells the story of the Trojan War, a legendary conflict in Greek mythology. Based on a screenplay by David Bienoff, who very freely adapts the story told by Homer in The IliadWolfgang Petersen creates a massive work, 2h43 of murderous assaults on the city of Troy and a sexy love story between Achilles and Briseis. This is Brad PittAt that time at the height of its popularity and acclaimed by his performances by David Fincher, who plays the Greek hero and demigod, a nearly immortal warlord.
This casting particularly addresses the cinematic story that is Troysince we more commonly speak of the famous character of Hélène (Diane Kruger in the film), at the origin of this mythical war. But in front of Wolfgang Petersen’s camera we adopt the point of view of Achilles.
Brad Pitt Sublimated… But Unhappy
Difficult to follow with its large ellipses, destabilizing due to the modernity of its adaptation, Troy shines above all with the performances of its main cast. This one, composed of Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Rose Byrne and Orlando Bloom, shines both in the fights and in the romantic dimension of the film. We note in particular the spectacular fight between Eric Bana and Brad Pitt, directed by the actors themselves.
Brad Pitt has bulked up and sculpted considerably for Troy. A plastic icon of 90s and 2000s cinema, his beauty is in fact that of a Greek statue, his long blond hair and his piercing blue eyes captured with admiration by Wolfgang Petersen.

The show is overall convincing and well done. Troy a commercial success with a worldwide box office of $497.4 million of recipes. But the reviews are very mixed. And several actors disown the film, including Brad Pitt himself. He explained in 2019 to the New York Times Magazine:
I had to do “Troy” because I had withdrawn from another film, so I had to do something for the studio. So they put me in Troy. It wasn’t painful, but I realized that the way the film was told was not what I wanted. I made my mistakes. What am I trying to say about “Troy”? I couldn’t go anywhere other than the center of the frame. It was driving me crazy. I had been too spoiled working with David Fincher. This is not a criticism of Wolfgang Petersen. “Das Boot” is one of the greatest films of all time. But at some point “Troy” became a commercial film. Every shot was like: “Here comes the hero!” There was no mystery.
