The Old Man and the Child can be (re)discovered on Netflix
Netflix, in addition to its rich offering of contemporary productions, stands out for its ability to valorize historical films. It currently has a large collection of Agnès Varda’s films, created by her collaboration with the Cinémathèque française.
The platform then allows its subscribers to do so (re)discover significant works from the pastand thus contributes to their preservation and dissemination to the greatest number of people possible. This is the case of Claude Berri’s film, The old man and the childdating back to 1967, and which is one of the most popular on the platform.
The black and white film, inspired by Claude Berri’s childhood, is set during World War II in France. It tells the story of a young Jewish boy, Claude (Alain Cohen), sent by his parents to the French countryside to escape Nazi persecution. There he is entrusted to Pépé, an old Pétainist and anti-Semitic played by Michel Simon, and his wife Mémé, played by Luce Fabiole. The relationship between Claude and Pépé is at the heart of the plot. Grandfather, unaware that Claude is Jewishhe treats him like his nephew.
