The Great Melodrama That Set Netflix On Fire
In 2019 the melodrama comes out in Türkiye The Miracle of Cell No. 7a free remake of the Korean drama of the same name released in 2013. It was a huge success at the time, with more than 5.3 million viewers going to Turkish theaters to discover the story of Memo, shepherd and mentally handicapped who lives with her mother and daughter, who were wrongly accused of the murder of a little girl and sentenced to death. This extraordinary success in Turkey inspired Netflix, which then acquired the global distribution rights The Miracle of Cell No. 7.

One day in 1983, Memo’s life was suddenly turned upside down by the death of the daughter of the commander, a high ranking officer during martial law. Memo was falsely accused of the murder and sentenced to death. He found himself in prison in cell number seven. It was unlikely that he would survive there, but while everyone in cell seven initially greeted him with hatred, they gradually began to believe in his innocence as he showed his big heart. Over time, everyone Memo touched came together to save his life.

An unexpected success for The Miracle of Cell No. 7
As the Covid-19 pandemic hits the world and populations find themselves confined, it was in mid-March 2020 that The Miracle of Cell No. 7 is released online worldwide. And it quickly became a huge hit, which is all the more surprising and attractive because no one had heard of it outside of Turkey. Neither the director Mehmet Ada Öztekin nor the casting led by Aras Bulut Iynemli in the lead role are known abroad, and it is therefore a total discovery for almost all Netflix subscribers.
At the time, Netflix’s content viewing metrics were in their infancy, but the success indicator was already in the Top 10. Shortly after it went online, Netflix announced that The Miracle of Cell No. 7 entered inside Top 10 of 40 countries. In France it is rapidly becoming Superior 1 and fascinates subscribers.
It is difficult not to be moved by Memo’s story, which deals with issues such as disability, the death penalty, sacrifice and even redemption. The film does not really go into nuance and ensures that tears will be drawn with very present tearful music and very dramatic stage effects. The main actor Aras Bulut Iynemli succeeds in his soundtrack, always a complex exercise when embodying disability. Doing too much is an elimination: always remember the rule “never be completely late” indicated in the Thunder in the tropics -, because doing too little just sounds wrong.
