X-Men ’97 creator Beau DeMayo speaks out about firing for the first time

Screenwriter was fired a week before the series’ first season premiered in March after working on two seasons

Fired from Marvel in March of this year, just days before the X-Men ’97one of the franchise’s recent successes, Beau DeMayo used his social media, last Thursday (15), to speak for the first time about the reasons that led to his dismissal, which until now was surrounded by mystery, and hinted that he had suffered homophobia during his time at the company.

“First of all, I’m grateful to have work in X-Men ’97collaborating with an incredibly talented group of people. Creating the revival has been a dream come true and the support the fans have shown has been touching. However, I felt it was urgent to speak out about my resignation.”it started DeMayo.

“Here is some fan art of X-Menwhich I posted on Instagram on LGBTQIAPN+ Pride Day in June. On June 13, Marvel sent me a letter informing me that they had removed my credits from Season 2 due to the publication. DeMayo he also stated that he had more to say on the subject, “But I need to take a step back from social media to find a safer space for me to be out there, proud and nerdy”he concluded, without going into details about the “disturbing pattern” mentioned.

Soon after the publication of DeMayoMarvel also decided to speak out on the matter and, in a statement to The Hollywood Reporterrevealed that the Mr. DeMayo was fired in March 2024 following an internal investigation”:

“Given the egregious nature of the findings, we immediately severed ties with him and he no longer has any affiliation with Marvel.”the company added.

Details about the dismissal of DeMayo were not revealed, but sources at the outlet said the screenwriter was fired for sexual misconduct. So far, he has not spoken out about the allegations.

On X-Men ’97

X-Men ’97a classic series about Marvel’s mutants, will continue the story that ended previously in the 5th season, shown in 1997. In the first trailer released, we see scenes from the last episode of the series, in which the professor Charles Xavier dies and leaves the X-Men with the responsibility of continuing to fight to defend the defenseless, as the group’s mentor and leader wished. Previously scheduled to debut in the second half of 2023, X-Men ’97 will arrive on Disney+ on March 20th, with two episodes released at once. The remaining chapters will arrive on the streaming platform weekly, as usual.

The voice cast of the new version of X-Men ’97 will feature the return of original actors from the series, including Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Catherine Disher as Jean Grey, Lenore Zann as Vampire, George Buza as Beast, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Chris Potter as Gambit, Adrian Hough as Nocturnal and Christopher Britton as Mr. Sinister. The actress Alyson Courtwho dubbed the Jubileewill gain a new character in the story, and the Brazilian Gui Agustini will do the voice of Roberto Da Costathe Sunspot.
