In the new episodes, Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin head to Hollywood, but a new mystery soon draws them back to Arconia.

With a fairly simple formula, it would be easy for Only Murders in the Building quickly fall into monotony. However, reaching its 4th season, the series starring Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place), Martin Short (Schmigadoon!) and Steve Martin (The Pink Panther) proves, with each new batch of episodes, its power to reinvent itself and remain one of the most intelligent, exciting and entertaining series on TV today.

In the new year, the trio of addicts podcasts of real crimes attracts the attention of Hollywood, which wants to make a film based on Only Homicides in the Building. The proposal takes Mabel (Selena Gomez), Oliver (Martin Short) and Charles (Steve Martin) to Los Angeles, California, and presents the first promise of the season: the opportunity to play with the backstage of the world capital of cinema, something that always turns out to be cool, whether due to the curiosity of the viewer or the infinite possibilities that Hollywood seems to offer.

Right away, we are introduced to an eccentric team of executives, producers and directors, responsible for the film Only Homicides in the Buildingas the directors of the novelty, the sisters brothers. Then we got to know the film adaptations of Mabel, Oliver and Charlesinterpreted by Eva Longoria(Desperate Housewives), Eugene Levy(Schitt’s Creek) and Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), into caricatured versions of themselves.

However, at least in this first episode, the possibilities remain only on paper, because the disappearance of Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch, Glee) — which had been shot at the end of the third season, as the public well knows — draws the trio back to the Arconia Building in New York to investigate a new mystery, leaving the film, Hollywood and the public waiting — literally — for scenes from the next chapters.

Quickly, the tone of Only Murders in the Building reminds me of the one from the first season, when Tim Kono (Julian Cihi, The Tick), an old friend of Mabelwas killed in Arconia, starting the story we have followed so far. This is because, although the trio did not know it, Sazz is not missing, but probably dead and the target was actually Charles.

So after two seasons, Mabel, Oliver and Charles they stop being supporting characters in the main mystery — whose curiosity leads them to investigate the crimes that happen in Arconia — and become part of it, which is even more promising than the change of scenery with the move to Hollywood.

To top it off, the hilarious Howard Morris (Michael Cyril Creighton, Dexter: New Blood) seems to have been quietly promoted to an assistant to the main trio and just the opportunity to see more scenes with the biggest animal lover the Arconia has ever seen is reason enough to give the play in another season of Only Murders in the Building.
